Kingdom Minded Ministries fosters the healthy development of ex-offenders, young adults(teens), and single parents. We are able to do this through our Food Service Training and Certificate Program & our Moral and Character Building Skills Program. These programs help create a new future for ex-offenders by helping to re-establish them back into society.
Over thlst 35 years, incarceration rates in the United States have grown to unprecedented levels and continue to climb. According to a report from the Pew Center (Public Safety Performance Project 2008), more than one in one hundred adults are currently incarcerated in prison or jail. Correspondingly, prisons are releasing record numbers of people each year. In fact, more than 700,000 people were released from state and federal prison in 2006 (Sabol and Conture 2008). The majority, nearly half a million people, are released to parole supervision via mandatory or discretionary release (Glaze and Bonczar 2007). The parole poulation is now at an all-time high, over 780,000 ex-offenders, a four-fold increase from 1980 (Glaze and Bonczar 2007; Hudges, Wilson and Beck 2001). There is about 25-30 ex-offenders being paroled each month, with approximately 2,000 on parole and about 5,000 on probation in the Kalamazoo county (Pastor Wells, MPRI).
Returning ex-offenders need more opportunities to remain ex-offenders. To reintegrate themselves in society requires two kinds of value- a value of their own skills and a skill that society will value. With community support and guidance, KMM will instill both into our clients.
Recidivism has become a crisis that infects all parts of the community and is detrimental to public safety, community cohesion, employment prospects and economic well-being, family stability and childhood development.
The are two problems that all ex-offenders face: obtaining employment, finding affordable housing. With today's economy it is even harder for ex-offenders to have a successful career or a possessitive re-entry back in to society. With the help of the Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative program(MPRI), we are making a difference.
Certain careers such as the medical profession have restrictions that prohibit persons with felonies from working in that field. The food service industry does not have such restrictions and is open for employment and ownership without these road blocks. This can certainly improve the chances for anyone with a felony record to obtain a success career.

KMM as a Nonprofit organization would like to address these issues by helping ex-felons have hope in their future. Many previous felons feel they have no ability to make a career legally, therefore returning to their "old ways."(as displayed in the facts above) KMM will restore hope to an ex-felon's once tainted future outlook. Upon completion of the 16-week course we will "pay" for them to get certified through the health department.

It is possible with a mind set to make small changes in how we prepare can impact our lives. The big decision is do "we want to eat to live" or " live to eat." The choice is in the hand and mind of the beholder. Yes, it is hard to break old habits and traditions in how we learned to cook so many good tasting, down home cooked now known as "heart attack meals" with lots of fat, Hamhocks, Salt pork, Butter, Lard and Fried everything. Etc. I will share ideas & recipes in classes on how food can still be tasty and pleasing to the palate of even aftican Americans. What I will bring to the table is options for choices that can help an individual move to healthier eating and still enjoy family favorites and the Soul Food Traditions.
